The Rocket Formerly Known as Black
Step Seven
Finishing and Painting
The first coat of primer was applied after the spackel fillets were reasonably smooth. (I used Plasticote Spot Primer Spray Lacquer, which has a much higher content of filler and builds quickly - it's great stuff if you can get it through the nozzle.) The application of primer always seems to expose more imperfections that aren't apparent before spraying, so I touch those up with Bondo Spot Putty. The photo to the right was taken after this step and before the next round of sanding. This step was repeated with finer and finer grit sandpaper until I was satisfied that ç was as smooth as I could get it. I set aside about a week just for sanding and priming, and I'd devote about an hour or so per day. The final results were not too bad. I painted at night because the dry Arizona heat makes the paint dry too fast, and it's difficult to get a good shine.
Once again, the airframe was mounted on the motorized Rotisserie Stand It turns at a perfect rate to apply paint, both for primer and gloss.
At left is ç after painting. Despite what you're thinking, it isn't really black. It is obsidian.
