Lightweight Motor Retainer

Bradley's first high power rocket used the base of a Coors Beer Can for the motor retainer. I decided on a similar solution for the Evil Grimace, but the base diameter was much smaller than most beverage cans. So I went on can collection expedition at my local grocery store and came home with several promising options. After trying a few, and getting totally juiced up on Red Bull, and other food stuff that comes in little cans, I determined that the best option is the can from Armour Potted Meat product, Or SPAM sandwich spread.

Here are the ingredients for potted meat product:

Ingredients: Mechanically Separated Chicken, Beef Tripe, Partially Defatted Cooked Beef Fatty Tissue, Beef Hearts, Water, Partially Defatted Cooked Pork Fatty Tissue, Salt. Less than 2 percent: Mustard, Natural Flavorings, Dried Garlic, Dextrose, Sodium Erythorbate, Sodium Nitrite

Less than 2% Natural flavor. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

The difference between Spam and Armor Potted meat is that the Spam can is a gold irridite color, while the Armour is buffed aluminum, so decor of your rocket may dictate your choice Armor is also a few cents cheaper, and seems to be easier to evacuate down the garbage disposal, which is a real plus.

Instructions:

  1. Open Can
  2. Discard contents. Warning! Do Not Eat!
  3. Clean can thoroughly. be careful not to get any of it on you.
  4. Cut off the bottom of the can, leaving a about .25" of the can wall
    1. How, this is dependent of the methods you have available, but I set a dremel tool cut-off wheel in my drill press, and brought the drill table up so that the cut off wheel will cut off the bottom of the can leaving .25" of side wall.
    2. Set the can open end down on the drill table
    3. Turn on the drill press, firmly but slowly plunge can into the cutoff wheel until the mandrel shank touches the can. Slowly rotate the can while firmly holding it until the bottom is complete cut off.
    4. Determine the center of the can bottom
    5. using a 1" spade bit, (not in a drill, do this by hand) place point on center of bottom, press and twist, and let the point cut through the can, continue until the teeth cut through can bottom.
    6. locate your screw mounting holes and drill.
    7. Finished!
