Standard Missile Second Launch

Photos from the second launch of the Standard Missile. This launch event was sponsored by the Arizona High Power Rocketry Association (AHPRA) and held on December 22, 2001 at the Rainbow Valley, AZ launch site. Many thanks to Bob Iannucci for this excellent set of photographs.

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt.

Rocket halves in the truck bed waiting for motors.

Installing sustainer recovery system.

Booster parachute compartment. The L850 motor comes right to the top of the 34" motor tube.

Installing booster recovery system.

The Flying Milk Jug of Death slides into place.

The booster slides onto the BlackSky equivalent rail.

Mark, Brad, and Cory enjoying the suspense.

Once the booster was upright, the igniteor was installed into the sustainer motor.

The sustainer is carefully aligned and put into place.

Aligning the fins on the booster and sustainer.

Arming the electronics and listening for the continuity tones.

Admiring the rocket on the rail.

Brad and Mark smile. Cory cops a 'tude.

Brad balances on the turnbuckle and prepares to leap into a flying elbow smash off the top rope.

The L850 fires, but only weakly as you can see by the flame. The rocket travels about 100 feet before the motor is fully up to pressure.

We want your opinion, so make like a Chicago Democrat and vote early, vote often, vote even if you are dead. However, as this is an electronic ballot, West Palm Beach Democrats will need to find a better excuse than hanging or pregnant chads for failing to properly fill out the form.
