Roadside Rockets
This is a collection of missiles, rockets, and rocket shape
items located on roadways and highways throughout the world.
 |
Get out the road atlas and plan your next family
road trip!
It's time again for another special collection of
rocket related flotsam from Rocket Team Vatsaas. You
won't want to miss any of these attractions on your next
family vacation! Be sure to pack a tape measure, graph
paper, and lots of Dramamine.
|
It's difficult to categorize how these stationary monuments to
rocket flight have found their way into the public eye. Some are
memorials to the heroic sacrifices made by the armed services.
Some are peculiar scrap metal art projects. Some are political
statements. Without us knowing it, some may even be a rusty
tribute to an unnamed fertility god. We will leave it up to you
to decide if any of them are even remotely interesting.
 |
This collection was originally inspired by this
Matador Missile on display along the major route to the
Grand Canyon out of Flagstaff. It got me thinking that
there had to be many such displays around the country. I
wasn't disappointed.
|
As we launch this page, we've only found a sample that
represents 22 of the United States, Puerto Rico, 4 Canadian
provinces, and the countries of Australia and Japan. If you have
a photo entry that we haven't captured, please let us know [HERE!] Extra
points if you can get yourself in picture. Double points if this
requires climbing gear.

| This excellent specimen is from somewhere in Alaska.
No idea what type of rocket it is supposed to be. This
kid obviously hasn't learned that no matter what the
season it's a bad idea to lick metal in Alaska. |

Sayeth photo contributor Lance Allgood: "Not
only do they have a few rockets & a flying saucer on
the outside of the building, they are an *amazing* place
to go for nuts, bolts, wiring, tubular nylon, gadgets,
widgets, thingamabobs, whatchamacallits, and whatnot that
could possibly be used in our high power rockets!"

| So if you are ever in Winter Park, stop
by and buy some flotsam, and tell'em we sent ya! |

Auburn, Massachusetts
Auburn is the location of Robert Goddards historic
first rocket flight. The event is properly commemorated
in American style by encapsulating the launch site in a
cheesy strip mall. Some of the photos come courtesy of
Andy Bakinowski and is his son.

|

There is no Goddard rocket at the site, but there is
this Polaris missile.
|
Cloquet, Minnesota

|
Minnesota Army National Guard Station:
This rocket is a USAMICOM MTR-15 BATS. (Ballistic
Aerial Target System), it is used to to train troops to
operate AA gatling guns and shoulder fired missiles. The
fins are canted to induce spin, and there are two spigots
towards the nose, presumably to dispences tracking smoke. It
is aimed ominously at the Perkins Resturant down the
street.
|
Also in Cloquet, MN
Cloquet is site the first and (until recently) only Frank Lloyd Wright designed Service
Station. It has it's very own SRBM shaped LP Tank.
The design appears to be a hybrid blend between an Estes
Big Bertha and a washing machine agitator.

Bracket Field

|
Aunt Effies Rocket!
When our mother took us to visit our spinster
great-aunt, we escaped at the first opportunity, and ran
down to the local playground so to climb on the big
playground rocket, where we would play imaginary games of
interstellar conquest, where we would land on a pristine
peaceful planet, oppress the indigenous lifeforms,
pillage their natural resources, addicted them processed
sugar and soap peras, then leave inhabitants in the hands
of a scaley, tentacled president-for-life.
Which is probably real reason the local principalities
of the nanny state pulled down the playground rocket in
2004, under the guise of child safety
But there is hope! bracketrocket.org is attempting to
bring the rocket back to the park, so go check out their website.

Note the concrete sewer pipe choo choo train in the

Wheaton, MN
Next to the Wheaton VFW Post there is a Loon Missile,
which is what became of the German V1- Buzzbomb.
However, if you ask at the local gas station to see the
loon, they may send you to see the Wolds Largest Mallard
at the junction of MN27 and US75.

|

Unfortunately, I haven't been through
Wheaton in years, and I don't have a picture of the
Wheaton missile. If you happen to be passing through,
Wheaton, be sure to snap me a picture.

Ironically, I spotted this display on the way to a MASA club lauch.

It looks nice, but I have no idea why it's out there.

Wisconsin Dells is what you get it if
you take the Poconos, Ocean City, and Coney Island,
removed all that is refined, then deposit on a barren

weld it shut.

Guam
Piti, Guam
Reader Rob Smith sent us this photo of a polaris
missile display while on a business venture in Guam. Rob
writes: It marks the
entrance to the aptly named Polaris Point Navy
facilities. "[The missile] also marks the spot
where about a thousand saki charged Japanese soldiers did
a screaming Banzai charge into Marine machine guns in
1944. It turned out badly for them....
Not as badly as if we had this puppy in 1944.

 Apparently
no one told the Navy not to launch their rockets so close
to the powerlines.

This collection is constantly growing. Check back to see the
latest additions!.
If you have snapped a picture of a roadside rocket display and
you would like to add it to our collection, click HERE. Your
submission should be of a rocket or missile, three dimensional
facsimile of a rocket. It must be approached by car or foot
without requiring paid admission. These may seem like silly
requirements, but it saves us the embarassment of explaining to
the well-intentioned reader that his photo of the World's
Largest Musky at the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in
Hayward, Wisconsin wouldn't be a great addition to this page.
